After spending nearly 4 weeks experiencing the numerous exciting things the city of Florence had to offer, we decided it was finally time to venture outside of the city walls and experience a different part of Italy. So at 8:04 yesterday morning we boarded our first train of the study abroad adventure and traveled to the town of Assisi, Italy. Going into this day trip I, personally, had little knowledge of the town of Assisi, other than what my roommates had told me from what they learned in their Italian Art Class. One bit of knowledge i had was that Assisi was a large pilgrimage site for many of the Catholic faith due to the town being the birthplace of St. Francis who founded the Franciscan religious order. Although I am not well versed in the acts of the catholic faith, I am very interested in the architecture of the cathedrals, basilicas, and churches. The other fact I was aware of about Assisi was that it was built on the side of a large hill which could provide for some great views.
What I did not know about Assisi, but came to learn, is how beautiful and quaint of a town it is. Although it is of the same types of construction as Florence, the fact it is built on a hillside allows for much more sunlight to reach down to the streets than here in Florence. The town is also much smaller than Florence which allowed for a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of inner city European life. The many photos to follow document the town of Assisi and the many gorgeous landscape views it has to offer. Enjoy.
