Following actually having some major school work to do this past week for midterm studio reviews, my roommates and I finally made our first venture back onto a plane since the exhausting trip over to Europe in early January in order to travel to Barcelona, Spain. In order to make the traveling as cheap as possible we took a bus from Florence to Pisa early Friday morning [6:40] and then flew from Pisa to Girona and took another bus from Girona to Barcelona. We arrived in Barcelona shortly after noon local time and then had the weekend to explore all the city of Barcelona had to offer, which was an extensive amount. After arriving on Friday and finding our hostel [Backpackers BCN] we decided to head towards the beach since it was a nice day [about 60 degrees]. We never did make it to the beach Friday though. After getting what many would call extremely lost and turned around in the city center we ended up much nearer the outskirts of Barcelona than we expected, but managed to come across the Olympic park from the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona, as well as a large art museum with a series of waterfalls fronting it. Friday night we met up with some of my roommates friends who are studying in Barcelona and went to a large beer hall with pool tables and dart boards [The Black Sheep] and also to a large dance club [Razzmatazz] which were both extremely entertaining and kept us out on the town until around five in the morning.
Upon waking up on Saturday we decided to head out on an approximately five mile walking tour of the Antoni Gaudi monuments scattered throughout Barcelona, including Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Casa Batllo, and Casa Mila. These monuments were all worth the walk to get to them [about 45 minutes - there is a metro you can take, but we decided to walk so we could see all of the things in between the destinations as well]. And later on Saturday we did finally make it to the beach, although it was in the dark. While there we kicked around a soccer ball on the beach and enjoyed fairly nice weather.
On Sunday we returned to Sagrada Familia to visit the inside. We had arrived there far too late in the day on Saturday and the line to get inside was extremely long. While at Sagrada Familia we also chose to climb the tower. While there we also realized the Barcelona marathon happened to be taking place and were able to view a portion of the race. The remainder of the day was spent simply walking around the city and viewing some of the other monuments which we had yet to see such as the Arc de Triomphe and the Barcelona Catedral [not spelled incorrectly here, they leave out the h]. We then stopped back at the hostel to pick up our things, walked to the bus station, took the bus to Girona, flight to Pisa, and bus back to Florence, arriving back to our apartment in Florence at around quarter after ten local time.
All in all, the trip to Barcelona was one I will certainly never forget and ranks high on the list of favorite locations I have visited so far. I would certainly recommend a trip to Barcelona to anyone lucky enough to get the opportunity to travel to Europe. As always, the photos to follow document the trip.
